Which Light Bulbs Are Energy Efficient?

There are two kinds of energy-efficient light bulbs available on the market today: compact fluorescent lights (CFL) and light -emitting diode (LED).

CFLs are a more powerful, light-bulb version of the familiar fluorescents light strips. They screw into your standard light sockets, come in a range of shapes and sizes, and give off a similar lighting effect to regular incandescent bulbs.

LEDs are miniature bulbs powered by the movement of electrons. This advanced technology replaces the filament inside a regular incandescent bulb — which explains why LEDs last longer (no filament to burn out) and are less bulky (no filament to house).

The most obvious benefit of CFL and LED light bulbs is that they require significantly less energy to operate than regular incandescent bulbs. Here’s a look at exactly how energy-efficient lighting saves you money – while also saving the planet.

Efficiency

CFLs are four times more efficient than an incandescent bulb, and they can last up to 10,000 hours — that’s 10 times longer than an incandescent. LED bulbs earn even better efficiency marks: They can last up to 100,000 hours, which means you could leave them on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for more than 11 years. Plus, using LEDs reduces your electric bill by 90 percent. (The actual lifetime of an energy-efficient light bulb depends on the particular brand and individual usage patterns.)

For each incandescent bulb you replace with an energy-efficient light bulb, you reduce CO2 emissions by half a ton. If every Nigeria switched just one bulb, it would prevent the emission of greenhouse gases equivalent to that which comes from nearly 800,000 cars on the road.
