CFLs are four times more efficient than an incandescent bulb, and they can last up to 10,000 hours — that’s 10 times longer than an incandescent. LED bulbs earn even better efficiency marks: They can last up to 100,000 hours, which means you could leave them on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for more than 11 years. Plus, using LEDs reduces your electric bill by 90 percent. (The actual lifetime of an energy-efficient light bulb depends on the particular brand and individual usage patterns.)

For each incandescent bulb you replace with an energy-efficient light bulb, you reduce CO2 emissions by half a ton. If every Nigeria switched just one bulb, it would prevent the emission of greenhouse gases equivalent to that which comes from nearly 800,000 cars on the road.
